Apprentice George Downing was taken to hospital after a fall from the Tony Carroll-trained Volcanic Jack in the Win Big With Betdaq Multiples Apprentice Handicap at Kempton.

Clerk of the course Barney Clifford said: "It looked like he clipped heels in the first race, that looked to be the cause of it.

"He was unconscious for about 40 seconds, then put on a stretcher and has now gone to hospital for further observation.

"He was alert and conscious when leaving the track, that was the information I got from the doctors."

There was a delay to racing of around 10 minutes before the one-mile event got under way.

Downing, who claims 5lb, was among the winners at Newbury on Tuesday night when partnering Cruise Tothelimit to success for Ian Williams.
