Weatherbys Ireland was founded in 1973, and has been an integral part of that country’s bloodstock scene ever since. Weatherbys Ireland GSB Ltd is the approved Thoroughbred Stud Book Authority under Irish and EU law, being Keepers of the General Stud Book. The operation is responsible for maintaining the register of all resident stallions and mares, along with all foals born in Ireland (including Northern Ireland) for which we issue identity passports incorporating since 1999 a unique microchip number.
In 2003, the Stud Book business was assigned to a distinct company, Weatherbys Ireland GSB Ltd, which is a Not for Profit business. Any profits that are made are returned to the Irish Breeding industry through breeders’ prizes, sponsorship and charitable donations. We work closely with the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders' Association.
This complements the British Stud Book company, which is run on identical lines.
Weatherbys Ireland also has its own parentage testing laboratory based at the Irish Equine Centre. This laboratory, through its DNA parentage testing service, ensures the integrity of the Irish breeding industry, thereby maintaining and consolidating confidence in the Irish Thoroughbred export trade. An important service is also provided for mare owners in identifying broodmares likely to produce Neonatal Isoerythrolysis, more commonly known as Jaundice Foal Syndrome, in their offspring. DNA services are also provided for a number of other stud books and breed societies. For further information on the Weatherbys Ireland DNA Testing Laboratory please click here.
Weatherbys Ireland also provides a variety of services to the Irish racing and breeding world, including:
