Charlie Appleby looking to Stage to weave Feilden magic

Charlie Appleby expects Stage Magic to put up a bold show in the bet365 Feilden Stakes at Newmarket on Tuesday.

The Dark Angel colt was a Group Three winner in France last season when he defeated Olmedo, who was beaten just a short head in a Classic trial at Longchamp on Sunday.

Appleby is equipping Stage Magic with cheekpieces for the first time as he looks to bounce back from a lacklustre effort on his final start in 2017.

"His profile until his last run looked very good," said Appleby.

"He beat Olmedo, who ran well in France on Sunday, but I think you can put a line through his last run as it came at the end of the season on heavy ground.

"He's wintered well, his preparation has gone great and although he's got a penalty to carry, a repeat performance of his win in France would make him a very valid player.

"We actually declared him for a Group One in Saint Cloud in cheekpieces, but that was abandoned in the end.

"I just think they might help him as he runs from the front and they could freshen him up."

Aidan O'Brien sends over Kew Gardens, who won the Zetland Stakes on his final start as a two-year-old, having finished a respectable distance behind stablemate Saxon Warrior in the Beresford Stakes prior to that.

Hugo Palmer's Arbalet reappears having had a wind operation, with Mark Johnston's Mildenberger, the Marco Botti-trained Dark Acclaim and Kevin Ryan's unexposed New Show among a field of eight.
