National - What the jockeys said

racing

Davy Russell (Tiger Roll, first)

"As a jockey this is the one you want to win, especially for someone like me, having 14 goes. On the way down the commentator said I was the oldest in the race so I thought 'I'd better not come back next year'. The Gold Cup is the Gold Cup and I've been lucky enough to win that, but the National is so hard to win."

David Mullins (Pleasant Company, second)

"I was hoping and praying I was going to get there and in another stride I would have, that's racing. I'm lucky, I won it two years ago (Rule The World), but I never thought I'd got up. He probably did a bit too much, but I had to let him go after the Chair, he was going so well. Davy went by me and I knew I wasn't going to win the race to the Elbow, so I thought I'd fill him up and have one last crack at him."

Barry Geraghty (Anibale Fly, fourth)

"Going to Becher's second time I knew I wasn't going as well as some of the others. Going to the Elbow I was trying to get third and he just hasn't seen it out. It was a proper race and Tony (Martin) had him in fantastic shape for it."

Bryony Frost (Milansbar, fifth)

"It was just an amazing feeling. He gave me the best first spin I could ever ask for. He battled hard to be fifth and deserves every pat he has got. Everyone is in tears washing him down. It is an amazing race and you can be so proud of your horses and what you've asked them to do."

Sean Flanagan (Road To Riches, sixth)

"He jumped great, got into a bit trouble at the Chair, but he stayed on well."

Robbie Dunne (Gas Line Boy, seventh)

"It was another great run over the fences."

Keith Donoghue (Valseur Lido, eighth )

"He ran a brilliant race and just got tired. I had a great spin and he jumped well."

Tom Scudamore (Vieux Lion Rouge, ninth)

"I had a grand ride on him. I nearly got brought down at the Canal Turn. I think I had Adam Wedge on me at one point, but gravity took its toll. From there it just stopped my fellow dead and I could never really get him back. Again he has not quite got home from the second-last. I was a little bit further back from last year to try something different, but it didn't quite work out."

Robbie Power (Raz De Maree, 10th)

"He jumped well and everything went well. The ground was not heavy enough for him. He is a slow horse and it was just too good. They didn't go very quick and I couldn't quicken with them. He jumped super and I got a great spin."

Brian Hughes (Seeyouatmidnight, 11th)

"He ran really well. He jumped really well throughout and he was really enjoying himself - he just got tired late on and considering he's run once this season, it was a great effort."

Katie Walsh (Baie De Iles, 12th)

"I was badly hampered at Valentine's, but she ran well."

Daryl Jacob (Ucello Conti unseated 27th),

"We were going well until we got squeezed."

Harry Cobden (The Dutchman, unseated 23rd)

"He was running well and was really taking to the fences before he went at Foinavon."

Rachael Blackmore (Alpha Des Obeaux, fell 15th)

"He was travelling nicely, but fell."

Ciaran Gethings (Saint Are, brought down 15th)

"He went OK, but we were brought down."

Andrew Lynch (Lord Windermere, unseated eighth)

"I was brought down at the Canal Turn. I still had a long way to go, but he was going well to that point."

Gavin Sheehan (Final Nudge, fell eighth)

"He got into a nice little rhythm jumping. I think after Becher's I took a bit of a pull as we all came a bit close. I jumped the Canal Turn fine, but it was that sandwiched I couldn't get my landing gear out and I took a tumble."

Adam Wedge (Buywise, unseated eighth)

"I was just unfortunate to get brought down at the Canal Turn as it was early on, but he was jumping well."

Sam Coltherd (Captain Redbeard, fell seventh)

"It was not his day but he got out of the gate quick enough. The one after Becher's I came out of the side door. We might run him in the Scottish National next week."

Danny Cook (I Just Know, fell sixth)

"Charlie (Deutsch) was a little bit sore on the landing side of Becher's, so they just decided to doll the fence off. So I just helped guide them and let them know as an experienced rider what was going on. He was jumping nicely and got into a lovely rhythm. I didn't think he was going too fast and we were going a nice steady pace, so I was happy where I was. He just over-jumped Becher's and knuckled on landing, but he was going really well up until then. Hopefully he will learn from that and come back next year bigger and stronger. I like the way he was jumping as he was making them feel very small. I think next year as a nine-year-old he will be better."

Harry Skelton (Virgilio, fell sixth)

"He was going OK, but fell at Becher's."

Sam Twiston-Davies (Blaklion, fell first)

"You can't write it really. One has fallen at the first and rolled straight in front of us, but that is how the National goes sometimes and you just have to lump it. I'll have to try again next year."

Alain Cawley (Perfect Candidate, fell first)

"We fell at the first."

Paul Townend (Total Recall, pulled up)

"He made too many mistakes on the first circuit and nearly fell a couple of times. He didn't take to it."

David Bass (The Last Samuri, pulled up)

"He didn't travel as well on the ground."

Paddy Brennan (Chase The Spud, pulled up)

"He was never happy and didn't take to it at all."

Brendan Powell (Maggio, pulled up)

"I was never really happy. He warmed up to his jumping when we went out for the second circuit and I just don't think he wanted to go round again. He is an old horse and the one thing I wanted to do was look after him."

Tom Bellamy (Double Ross, pulled up)

"He jumped superbly, but on that ground he doesn't get the trip and I pulled him up before the last."

Sean Bowen (Warriors Tale, pulled up)

"He pulled up in the end and probably wants better ground. He jumped brilliantly, but he probably didn't stay."

Tom O'Brien (Tenor Nivernais, pulled up)

"He gave me a great spin around and I loved every minute of it. I did pull up, but I love the race and loved every second of that."

JJ Slevin (Thunder And Roses, pulled up)

"It was a great ride, he just got very tired and was pulled up."

James Bowen (Shantou Flyer, pulled up)

"It was a pretty good spin and he jumped for fun early on, but he just got tired; it was very enjoyable."

Mark Walsh (Carlingford Lough, pulled up)

"He ran well, but got tired."

Henry Brooke (Delusionofgrandeur, pulled up)

"He didn't really travel."

Aidan Coleman (Pendra, pulled up)

"He gave me a good spin, but got tired."

Jonathan Burke (Childrens List, pulled up)

"He jumped like he had been going round there all his life. He just got tired."
