Rejaah gives Nigel Hawke cause for Cheltenham celebration of his own

Nigel Hawke was celebrating the 20-1 victory of Rejaah in the Catesby Estates Plc Mares' Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham after a strange few days.

Hawke sold subsequent triple Cheltenham Festival and Grand National winner Tiger Roll after just one run in a Market Rasen juvenile hurdle.

Many have been teasing him since that he should have held on a bit longer, but he was just happy to have played a small part in his success story.

Having paid £10,000, Hawke sold Tiger Roll to Gigginstown House Stud for £80,000 a few months later.

"He still feels part of the family. One thing he could always do was jump and while I told Gigginstown I thought he might win the Triumph, I didn't think he'd win the National!" said Hawke.

Rejaah made most of the running under Tom Cannon and gamely held off Whatzdjazz for a valuable Listed win.

"She was a nice juvenile two years ago and then we went chasing, but she's always had niggling problems so we gave her a year off," said Hawke.

"She's not very big, but we went chasing with her because of the allowance she got, she's rated over 130 and was getting 7lb so we had to go in that direction before giving her time to catch up with herself.

"The plan has been to bring her back when the ground dried up, so we'll keep going now."

A massive leap at the last sealed the deal for Midnight Target (7-2) in the EBF/Thoroughbred Breeders' Association Mares' Novices' Handicap Chase.

The Bay Birch and Pretty Reckless appeared to be travelling better, but John Groucott's charge responded to Lee Edwards' urgings.

Nicky Henderson's Dame De Compagnie justified 13-8 favouritism in the Huw Stevens, Jo Whiley Afterparty Onsale Mares' Novices' Hurdle and fences now beckon.

Dan Skelton's Stylish Dancer (9-2) won the Arkells Brewery Fillies' Juvenile Handicap Hurdle, just getting the better of a photo finish with Cubswin.

Earlier on, the RL Group Mares' Handicap Chase was abandoned on welfare grounds due to the extreme heat.
