Geldings by Kapgarde stole the show on day one of the 2016 August NH Sale, including the session topper (Lot 110, pictured) being by the Haras de la Hetraie-based son of Garde Royale.

The day’s top lot is already named; Idee de Garde and is out of the French Listed-placed mare Idee Recue (Sicyos). He was bought by bloodstock agent Gerry Griffin. The gelding was entered in June’s Derby Sale, but had to be withdrawn from that engagement by vendor Mocklershill.

“Let’s hope he’s lucky!” smiled agent Gerry Griffin after spending €52,000 on the new acquisition. “As always the nice ones are hard to buy. This horse will be going to Greystoke into training with Nicky Richards and is for an existing owner in the yard.”

Griffin is hoping lightning will strike twice – at the 2014 August Sale he bought Betameche, also a son of Kapgarde, for €50,000. The useful gelding has since won two bumpers from two starts and looks to have a bright future.

Two lots tied for second-best honours with sales of €35,000 apiece. The second-best priced son of Kapgarde, offered by Glenwood Stud, was signed for by Bernice Murphy from Ballyboy Stables (Lot 30), while Margaret O’Toole bought a Parkville Stud-offered Milan gelding (Lot 63). He is from the Grade 1 National Hunt family of Jessies Dream and Buck House.

Ballyboy Stables is a point-to-point consignor that has made the most of the new Tattersalls Ireland Cheltenham May Sale – at this year’s renewal Denis Murphy’s stable sold three lots in the top ten for sums of £190,000, £135,000 and £90,000. The stable’s five-lot draft at the sale sold for an average price of £100,000.

The top-priced filly at today’s August sale was a daughter of the Grange Stud’s Getaway. She was sold by The Beeches Stud, The Property of Yvonne Kiely to British trainer and point-to-point consignor Tom Lacy for €16,000 (Lot 78) . The filly is out an Old Vic own-sister to the three-time Grade 3 winner Grangeclare Lark.

Getaway’s first crop are four-year-olds of this year and the son of Monsun has had one winner from just a handful of runners – at the beginning of July his filly Verdana Blue was successful in a National Hunt Flat race at Killarney for trainer, owner and breeder Edmond Kent.
