While George Baker hopes to celebrate more success in Europe next week, he enjoyed a victory much closer to home when Manton Grange took the feature at Kempton on Tuesday.

With his last two winners coming at Clairefontaine in France and Les Landes in Jersey, the Chiddingfold handler saw the four-year-old put his odds-on defeat at Windsor behind him in the Matchbook Traders Conference Handicap when casting his rivals aside by three lengths.

"I am delighted with the horse as we always thought a bit of him. It was a very canny ride by Trevor Whelan," Baker said of his 16-1 scorer.

"He got beat at Windsor before Royal Ascot. I thought he was going to win, but he got done by the 12-year-old Shifting Star who perhaps had the run of the race up the near-side rail.

"It is lovely to get some compensation in a decent prize like this. He has had his problems and it has taken us a while to get there, but he is definitely going the right way now.

"There are plenty of races for him and hopefully he can sneak into a good one off a light weight."

He added: "It is good to get a winner back home, but we go where the opportunities are. We had a good time at Clairefontaine and we are going out to Ostend in Belgium on Monday so hopefully we can get a winner there."

We Are The World looked a reformed character in stamping his authority over his rivals in the Happy Birthday Laura Macmillan Novice Auction Stakes.

Having undergone a gelding operation since fluffing his lines at Ffos Las last time out, the son of Sir Percy, who finished eighth in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot, took the mile contest by a length and three-quarters to form the opening leg of a double for jockey Luke Morris.

Winning trainer Archie Watson was at Deauville, where he said of the 4-11 winner: "He has always been a horse that we have liked and he ran a very good race on his second start in the Chesham.

"I always felt he would want a mile. He got a bit worked up at Ffos Las and has been gelded subsequently.

"I thought he behaved impeccably today and by all accounts he got the job done well. I hope he can continue to progress from here.

"He will make up into a nice 10-furlong horse and he will certainly be a nice handicapper next year."

The Sir Mark Prescott-trained Wolfcatcherjack (5-6) backed up his recent win at the Sunbury track to complete Morris' double when taking the concluding Better Odds With Matchbook Betting Exchange Handicap by two and a quarter lengths.

Finley Marsh moved to within one winner of having his claim reduced from 7lb to 5lb when steering the Richard Hughes-trained Bluff Crag (25-1) to glory by a length and a half in the Smarter Bets With Matchbook Betting Exchange Handicap.

W G Grace (2-1) from the yard of Mark Johnston did just enough to hold off Laura Knight by a neck in the six-furlong nursery, while Influent (11-2) made her first start for trainer James Tate a winning one with a two-length success in the mile fillies' maiden.

Maakaasib (6-4) got up in the closing strides to get Adam Kirby and Simon Crisford on the scoresheet when claiming the Matchbook Betting Podcast Handicap by a neck.
