Ffos Las officials forced to concede defeat

This afternoon's high-profile meeting at Ffos Las has been abandoned following a second inspection at midday.

Conditions at the Carmarthenshire circuit were described as heavy but raceable earlier this morning after 10 millimetres of rain overnight, but clerk of the course Keith Ottesen felt it prudent to check on conditions at 9am due to the threat of further rain.

Ottesen was happy to give the fixture the green light at that stage, but conditions "deteriorated significantly" in the next couple of hours and officials have had no option but to call off proceedings with the rain continuing to fall.

Ottesen said: "It was raceable at 9am, but it hasn't stopped raining since and conditions have deteriorated significantly, unfortunately.

"We've had over an inch of rain since yesterday and we have standing water in places.

"We had an inspection accompanied by some trainers and jockeys and in the interests of safety, the stewards have deemed the track unfit for racing."

The seven-race card was due to feature the Dribuild Ltd Welsh Champion Hurdle and the Dribuild Construction West Wales National, with both races scheduled to be shown live on Channel 4.
