Jamie Osborne planning hurdles switch with Flat performer Battalion

Smart Flat performer Battalion is set to make his hurdling debut before the end of the month.

Trainer Jamie Osborne, a former top jump jockey, reports the eight-year-old to have schooled well ahead of a switch of codes.

Osborne has picked out possible races at Southwell on February 25 and Plumpton the following day as starting points.

"We'll give hurdling a go. He'll be entered at Plumpton and Southwell," said the Lambourn handler.

"He's been jumping all right at home. If he takes to it, who knows, he might be good at it."

Should Battalion prove successful over obstacles, he might get an entry at the Cheltenham Festival.

Osborne added: "It's all about enjoying these horses and his owners (Melbourne 10 Racing) would dearly love to have a runner at the Cheltenham Festival, so if he were to go all right on his first start over hurdles, we might do it.

"All options are open for now, anyhow."

Battalion already holds an early-closing entry on the Flat in the Betway Winter Derby at Lingfield on February 24 in which he was sixth 12 months ago when sent off favourite.
