Rayvin Black makes fencing mark at Ludlow

Oliver Sherwood's popular nine-year-old blotted his copybook when unseating Tom Garner at the first fence at Exeter, but made amends in admirable fashion.

The 5-1 chance led at the second fence and kept on resolutely when challenged by 6-4 favourite Coastal Tiep to take the Yvonne Burdekin Novices' Chase by four lengths.

Sherwood said: "That was always going to be on the cards one day. He's been a little star.

"I was chuffed to bits with the way he jumped. He's not the biggest, but he loves his jumping.

"What happened at Exeter last time was one of those things."

Sherwood was full of praise for the Grade Two hurdles winner, who survived major surgery last year.

"We nearly lost him last spring when he had colic," added the Lambourn trainer.

"He had to have major surgery, so to come back is testament to my team and the horse himself.

"I don't know what we'll do now. We'll just grab what we can, when we can."

Sherwood was narrowly denied a brace when Road To Rome was beaten a neck by Victor Dartnall's Admiral's Secret (13-2), ridden by Conor Shoemark, in the Jenkinson's Caterers Chase.

However, trainer Henry Daly did enjoy a double with Goohar and Spider's Bite.

It was a first win over fences at the first attempt for Mark Galligan as he galvanised Goohar (3-1) to hold Captain Buck's by a neck in the His Royal Highness The Prince Of Wales Challenge Trophy Amateur Riders' Handicap Chase.

But there was a sting in the tail, as Galligan was banned for four days for using his whip above the permitted level from the second-last fence.

Lorcan Williams, rider of runner-up Captain Buck's, also got four days for the same offence, while Barry O'Neill, who partnered third-placed Federici, was suspended for two days for using his whip without allowing his mount time to respond from approaching the final fence.

Champion jockey Richard Johnson made Daly's day at his local track with victory on Spider's Bite (5-2) in the Ludlow Point To Point 28th April Maiden Hurdle.
