There was robust trade at the Tattersalls Ireland Ascot July Sale today with a total of 24 lots breaking the £20,000 barrier, 18 more than 2015 with the top lot selling for £75,000. A total of 137 lots were sold for record £1,303,200, a rise of 56%, at an average of £9,512, up 48% on 2015 and a median of £4,500, an increase of 33% on the corresponding year. The clearance rate was 78%.

Top honours on the day went to Lot 111, Rock On Rio from Denis Murphy’s Ballyboy Stables. The gelding by Captain Rio impressed on his debut by winning a four-year-old Maiden at Tralee in May. He was knocked down for £75,000 to young and upcoming trainer Andrew McNamara who is already making a name for himself in the training ranks.

Wildcard entry Fortified Bay (Lot 128A) proved a popular addition to the sale. By Makfi, the four-year-old gelding won a Bumper at Perth only his only start. Offered by Sam Curling’s Skehanagh Stables, he was sold to Kevin Ross Bloodstock who had to go to £70,000 to secure the winner.

Earlier in the day, Alan Swinbank’s Western House Stables offered the lightly raced Austerity. The son of Elnadim was bought by JJ O’Leary who paid £47,000 for the close relation of black-type performer Celtic Silence and Celtic Sapphire.
