Last night’s Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association (TBA) Annual Awards Dinner culminated with the presentation of the prestigious Andrew Devonshire Award.

As the industry celebrated another great year of British breeding, the event concluded with the announcement that Kirsten Rausing had been chosen, by the TBA Board, as the recipient of the award to honour her long term commitment to the Thoroughbred breeding industry.

TBA Chairman, Julian Richmond-Watson said: “The presentation of the Andrew Devonshire Award is recognition of Kirsten’s long term dedication to the British Thoroughbred breeding industry. A former Chairman of the TBA, Kirsten also sits on several committees that influence and shape policy that affects British Thoroughbred breeders. Her stud farm, Lanwades, based on the outskirts of Newmarket stands sires that have long provided breeders with opportunities to continue to improve the breed. Kirsten is a well-deserving recipient for this esteemed award.”

The other ‘mystery’ award of the evening, The Dominion Bronze, was awarded to Gill Jeffrey of Goffs UK for her long term commitment to the industry. Jeffrey has worked for the company for 28 years, where she has served as PA to both Harry and Henry Beeby. A role which also includes managing the sales’ office on sales’ days, where so many breeders rely on her unflappable and helpful approach.

The Flat Statistical Awards were dominated by Sheikh Mohammed’s breeding operation, Darley (part of the Godolphin Management Co. Ltd.), which won; The Queen’s Silver Cup for leading British-based flat breeder, The BBA Silver Cigar Box (Dubawi) for leading British-based Flat stallion, The Tattersalls’ Silver Salver (Poet’s Voice) for leading British-based Flat first season sire, and The Barleythorpe Cup (Exceed And Excel), for leading British-based stallion in terms of individual winners.

Kayf Tara once again showed his authority within the NH breeding industry, when winning both the Horse & Hound Cup and The Whitbread Silver Salver. This is the seventh time in the last eight seasons that the stallion has headed the list of NH sires in terms of earnings and the fourth time he has topped the tables in terms of individual chase winners.

Newsells Park Stud collected the TBA Silver Salver (Flat Special Merit Award) and Foaling Manager, Sue Caldwell, was announced the winner of the Annual Stud Staff Award.

TBA Flat Breeder of the Year, Hascombe & Valiant Studs, were presented with the TBA Silver Rose Bowl, following a fantastic year on the racecourse for their flag-bearer Golden Horn.

The Langham Cup was won by Caroline Wilson for Small Breeder of the Year, whilst The Queen Mother’s Silver Salver was presented to Simon and Helen Plumbly - for NH Achievement.

The broodmare prizes were awarded to Ardstown (Robin and Scarlett Knipe) and Swain’s Gold (Willie and Elaine Carson). The Dudgeon Cup was awarded to the former for remarkable achievement in 2015-2016 NH season with Thistlecrack. Meanwhile, Swain’s Gold collected the Flat equivalent; The H.J. Joel Silver Salver, for her successful season which included Irish Derby winner Jack Hobbs.

Commenting on the event, Louise Kemble, CEO, Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association said: “We were delighted to be celebrating and recognising successes with breeders here tonight. Darley once again dominated the Flat statistical awards, but it has also been good to see smaller breeders amongst this year’s winners. On behalf of the TBA I would like to thank all of those that supported the event.”
