Records smashed on Day 1 of Goffs Land Rover Sale

Following a fourth successive year as the leading store sale at the Cheltenham Festival, the opening day of the Goffs Land Rover Sale saw records smashed with a phenomenal 93% clearance rate and the highest ever average for the sale of €43,394, up 27% on 2016. Median rose by 36% to €38,000, while the number of six figure sales also increased with nine lots making €100,000 or higher.

Topping trade was Brown Island Stables’ son of Getaway out of an own sister to Grade 3 winner On The Other Hand (Lot 144 - pictured) that sold to Joseph O’Brien for €160,000.   O’Brien struck earlier in the day when going to €150,000 for Lot 19 from Oak Tree Farm, the three year old Network gelding Easywork D’Olivate, and followed shortly after with the €100,000 purchase of Rathmore Stud’s son of Fame And Glory (Lot 29).

Paul Nicholls and Tom Malone purchased another of the Day 1 stars when securing Busherstown’s three year old gelding by Kapgarde, named Flic Ou Voyou (Lot 255), for €125,000, while another highlight was the outstanding son of Getaway from Lakefield Farm (Lot 105) that sold to Mouse Morris for €120,000.

Reflecting on a remarkable day’s trade, Goffs Chief Executive Henry Beeby said:

“With four more winners at Cheltenham 17 than any other store sale, and what we thought was a catalogue of real quality, we were quietly hopeful of a good trade today, especially after enjoying such vibrancy at Doncaster last month.

However even we have been blown away by the strength and depth of today’s sale that has returned strong growth in every area. Average and median have both risen to record levels, up by over a quarter and a third respectively, and it is especially noteworthy that the gap between the two figures is relatively little which points to a very level trade throughout. That impression is totally endorsed by an amazing clearance rate of 93% which was driven by a near frenzied trade from start to finish and at all levels.

As ever we are extremely grateful to our vendors who continue to provide us with catalogues of real quality and, indeed, this is a sale that now regularly competes for the very best, a fact that is then vindicated by the many successes of Land Rover graduates at the highest level year after year.

We look forward to tomorrow’s sale as we believe the quality of our Part 2 sale should also be very evident”.

Day 2 of the Land Rover gets underway at 10am with another high class selection of stores.  All horses offered across both days of the sale are eligible for the €100,000 Goffs Land Rover Bumper 2018.
