Polar River cruises to UAE Oaks success

Polar River stretched her unbeaten record to four races with victory in the three-runner UAE Oaks at Meydan.

Trained in Dubai by American Doug Watson, the three-year-old filly is favourite for the UAE Derby in three weeks' time and has also been earmarked for a possible assault on the Kentucky Oaks in May.

She was not as visually impressive as on previous runs, but Pat Dobbs never once needed to resort to the whip to defeat Vale Dori, who made up late ground once the game was up.

Watson said: "It got close in the end, but he (Dobbs) just kind of eased up there.

"We didn't want a hard race and I'm glad to get away with it.

"That (UAE Derby) is the plan and we'll work towards that - she just does everything so well."

Dobbs said: "She just idled in the last furlong and I didn't want to get serious with her."

Pure Diamond had earlier led home a Godolphin one-two in the Meydan Classic.

Harry Bentley's partner, trained by Saeed bin Suroor, was much too good for Charlie Appleby's Comicas in the Listed affair over seven furlongs.

Bentley said: "She has a deadly turn of foot and she did that really easily."
