Third Intention claims Old Roan Chase at Aintree

Third Intention delivered the big-race victory he has long promised in the 188Bet Monet's Garden Old Roan Chase at Aintree.

The Colin Tizzard-trained nine-year-old may have won just three of his previous 28 starts over fences, but he has been placed on a further 16 occasions, including a string of excellent efforts in Graded company.

Sent off at 5-1 for his first start since April, Third Intention was given a patient ride by Aidan Coleman and remained towards the rear of the seven-strong field rounding the home turn.

Vilbrato Valtat briefly looked to have cut loose when striking on between the final two fences, but Third Intention came to throw down a challenge on the run to the last and after an accurate leap, landed running.

God's Own, who ended last season with successive Grade One victories at Aintree and Punchestown, appeared to be caught flat-footed early in the straight, but finished powerfully from the final fence and was just a length and three-quarters behind Third Intention passing the post.
