The record for the highest price ever given at the Tattersalls Ireland September Sale was smashed on Day 2 with the sale of a colt by Kodiac (Lot 491) for €275,000.
Shadwell Estate Company bought the full-brother to Adaay, a dual Group 2 winner who raced for Sheikh Hamdan and is now standing in partnership at Whitsbury Stud. Stephen Collins of Derrinstown Stud was responsible for the bidding.
"He is a racy, strong and sizeable individual," said Collins, who outbid Eamonn Reilly of BBA Ireland. "He has a great step and some quality to him. He has a stallion's page and is similar to Adaay as a yearling. If things go well, we would be hoping, of course, that this horse could join the stallion roster."
Sold by Grove Stud, the colt was a €60,000 pinhook last autumn from the Fox family's Commane Stud in County Cork.
It was a day of successful pinhooks - the Excelebration half-brother to Lady Kaya, this year's Moyglare Stakes (G1) runner-up, was sold by Kitty Cowhey's Loughmore Stables for €120,000 having been purchased by Matt Coleman of Stroud Coleman Bloodstock for €26,000.
Coleman, speaking on behalf of the group who consigned the colt, which included Cowhey and Luke Barry of Manister Stud, said: "We selected him because the mare had already had three foals rated over 90, and her son Midterm Break had won the Tattersalls Ireland sales race, the plan was always to come here to resell. It is for luck that Lady Kaya has come through as well."
Joe Foley, who was buying on behalf of Clipper Logistics, said: "This is a lovely colt, he stands up on his own merits. I saw him two mornings ago and decided then that we really wanted to try and buy him. He has been very well presented by the consignors."
Killourney Mór Farm's No Nay Never colt also fetched €120,000 and was purchased by agent Alex Elliott (Lot 340).
"He is for a new client and the colt will go to be trained in Newmarket," said Elliott of the second foal out of the Starspangledbanner mare Dara's Girl, a half-sister to the Flying Childers Stakes (G2) winner Tournedos. He was my pick of the sale, he is a gorgeous physical and the sire is carrying it all before him. I didn't think I'd get him, so I am delighted."
Matt Mitchell, CEO of Tattersalls Ireland said: "There were many positive aspects over the last two days including a total of 411 horses sold, achieving a turnover of €10,488,000. A record breaking ten horses selling for €100,000 or more, and the highest price in the history of the sale for Lot 491, the full-brother to Adaay selling to Shadwell for €275,000."
"It has to be recognised that the market remains select. An extra 78 (17%) horses offered over the last two days was not matched by buyer demand. The current market conditions will dictate that the numbers offered need to be both selective and limited in terms of quality and pedigree."
