Weatherbys Ireland DNA Laboratory has been involved in animal parentage testing since 1985. Initially the laboratory offered a blood typing service to confirm pedigrees as part of foal registration for Weatherbys Ireland. In 1990 the laboratory extended this service to the Non-thoroughbred sector as part of the registration of foals for the Irish Horse Board. At the turn of the century the laboratory introduced DNA technology which superseded blood typing and provided further opportunities to extend DNA technology to confirm pedigrees of other animal species such as cattle, sheep, dogs and cats. The Laboratory is now offering its service to the Irish and British livestock industries and is recognised as one of the leading laboratories in the world in multi animal species pedigree verification. In January 2011 the laboratory introduced cattle genomic testing to enhance the prediction values for the estimated breeding index (EBI) for individual breeding stock for the livestock industry.
Overall the function of the laboratory is to provide a backup to the integrity in animal breeding within the Irish agri-industry. This facility helps to maintain confidence in our export trade now and in the future.
The laboratory is an institutional member of the scientific body the International Society of Animal Genetics (ISAG) and is also accredited by The International Committee for Animal Recording (ICAR). It is the only such laboratory in Ireland recognised by (ISAG) to have achieved the necessary standards in multi-animal species parentage testing. The laboratory has also been accredited with CSPro certification by Illumina.
We are now genotyping the bovine 3K, 54K and 770K (HD) SNP chips to increase reliability of genetic predictions in the livestock industry. Further information on this service can be found here.
