It has been a legal requirement for all animals that are members of the horse family to be issued with a passport since 28th February 2005. That includes all breeds of horses and donkeys.

ID Passport Application

Weatherbys is an authorised Passport Issuing Organisation, and provides passports for animals of unknown or unverified pedigree. If a horse already has a passport it is illegal to apply for another passport. Please note the ID Passport Service is NOT a racing or breeding register. In order to apply for an ID Passport, please download, complete and return the form below.

We guarantee to process correctly completed applications using the fast-track service within two working days of receipt. Please Note: Under the Horse Passport Regulations 2015 (England), applications for equine passports can only be accepted for microchipped animals. All markings submitted must be signed by a vet.

Passport applications received after the later of six months from the horse’s birth, or the 31st of December in the year of birth can be processed but the ID passport issued must be marked “Replacement” under EU law and the horse signed out of the human food chain at issue.


Change of Ownership

It is a requirement under the Horse Passport (England) Legislation to register a change of ownership with the relevant Passport Issuing Organisation (PIO) within 30 days of acquiring a horse. For animals with Weatherbys ID Passports or British Horse Database Passports please download, complete and return the form below with the horse’s passport and the required fee.

Duplicate Passports

It is a requirement of the owner to apply for a duplicate passport if the original has been lost.

In order to apply for a duplicate ID passport if the original is lost, please download, complete and return the form below with the indicated fee.

Change of Details

In order to make any amendments to the horse’s passport, e.g. change of address, change of horse colour, gelding notification, etc. please return the passport to us with an accompanying letter detailing the required amendment and the fee of £15.00.


Notification of Deceased Equines

It is an EU requirement to advise the relevant Passport Issuing Organisation (PIO) within 30 days when your horse dies and return the passport to them. As per the legislation, the passport will be recorded as "void". If you wish the passport to be returned to you, please indicate this in an accompanying letter, including your full postal return details.

Please note that the date of death will need to be provided.  Weatherbys' passports for horses that are deceased should be returned to: Weatherbys ID Passports, Sanders Road, Wellingborough, Northants NN8 4BX. There is no charge for this service.
