A new record top price of £380,000 yesterday continued the evolution of the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale at Doncaster. This followed another superb season on the track headed by the Classic victory of Laurens and the Group 1 exploits of top two-year-old Advertise.

The previous sale record of £280,000 had been achieved on three occasions, two of which became Group winners; the Royal Ascot Group 3 Jersey Stakes winner and now sire Gale Force Ten and current 3YO Yafta who won the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes in July.

Consigned by Newsells Park Stud, the sale topping colt (Lot 20, pictured) was from the first crop of Gleneagles and was billed as a highlight in the build-up with Julian Dollar stating before the sale that “he is in my top five of yearlings I’ve ever been involved with at Newsells.” The colt lived up to those high expectations when selling to SackvilleDonald who commented “he’s the standout horse in this sale and the nicest horse I’ve seen at Doncaster in many a year.”

Other highlights from yesterday’s opening session included Abbeville Stud’s Exceed and Excel filly (Lot 256) which sold to Oliver St Lawrence for £200,000, while Trinity Park Stud’s Acclamation filly (Lot 265) was another to turn heads late in the evening when selling to Joe Foley for £185,000.

A total of 19 yearlings sold for six-figure sums with others including two colts selling for £150,000; Norris Bloodstock’s Oasis Dream colt (Lot 175) who was knocked down to the Hong Kong Jockey Club and Rathbarry Stud’s Acclamation colt (Lot 92) who was sold to BBA Ireland and Richard Knight.

Creighton Schwartz Bloodstock and John Dance, who purchased Laurens from this sale in 2016, purchased another high-class filly when going to £140,000 to secure Houghton Bloodstock’s Gleneagles filly (Lot 259) while Phoenix Thoroughbreds, who have also enjoyed Group 1 success this year with Advertise, purchased a Camacho colt (Lot 134) with Dermot Farrington for £125,000. Shadwell were also active purchasing six yearlings including a colt from the first crop of Muhaarar (Lot 21) for £120,000.

The second and final day of the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale at Doncaster will commence today at 10am.
