Inspired Connor Murtagh cuts loose at Newcastle

Connor Murtagh redefined the well-worn cliche 'enterprising ride' with an unusual victory at Newcastle on Thursday.

Murtagh was aboard 5-1 shot Outlaw Torn in division two of a mile-and-a-quarter handicap for apprentice jockeys and quickly shuffled his companion into the lead.

But then things turned a little surreal as Outlaw Torn extended his advantage to fully 30 lengths at the halfway stage.

Newcastle racegoers must have expected the pack to close in, but Murtagh's inmate simply kept going and stayed on nicely to strike by seven lengths from 100-1 outsider Zarkavon.

"It's great from our point of view, but if you give a wonderful horse like Outlaw Torn that sort of an advantage, he is going to capitalise on it."
