Precautionary inspection but hopes high for Newcastle meeting

Officials at Newcastle are "very optimistic" the jumps meeting planned for Gosforth Park on Monday will go ahead, despite calling a precautionary inspection for 8am on raceday.

The going is described as soft, heavy in places, but temperatures could dip on Sunday evening with Monday morning offering the possibility of wintry showers.

Clerk of the course James Armstrong tweeted: "7mm of rain through Sat @NewcastleRaces. Going now Soft, Heavy in pls. Slight grass frost Sun morn. Sun into Mon am could see some wintry showers from NE also slight chance of a light frost (-1c).

"Will Inspect 8am in light of f'cast however v optimistic all should be fine."
