Today’s DBS January Sales saw 170 horses-in-training, NH foals and mares sold to a diverse buying bench which allowed the sale to consolidate the substantial gains made in the last two years.

The NH foal session’s statistics mirrored those of 2015 with 11 fewer lots offered while the sale as a whole saw the turnover grow by 21% to £1,426,250.

The NH foal session saw its two top lots come in quick succession with Haras de Faydeau’s Walk In The Park colt (Lot 194) attracting plenty of interest in the ring before being sold to Tom Malone for £35,000. That was then surpassed only a few lots later with Overbury Stud’s Kayf Tara colt (Lot 202), who is out of an own sister to the Grade 1 winners Sunday Flight and Golden Flight, selling to Brendan Bashford for £38,000 (pictured).

The NH Mare session completed the sale and attracted a good draft of mares that saw the sale’s top price equalled with Trickledown Stud’s blue-blooded mare Katmai (Lot 255), a half-sister to the Grade 1 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Best Mate, selling to Kieran Cotter for £35,000. The NH Mare section also saw the Listed winning Blue Buttons (Lot 274) sell to Swanbridge Bloodstock for £25,000.

DBS’ Managing Director Henry Beeby commented: “The last couple of years have seen the NH foal market at DBS enjoy a vibrant trade for the small numbers catalogued and 2016 has consolidated those big rises. As ever we would have liked more and will continue in our endeavours to persuade British NH breeders to bypass other sales in November in favour of selling at home in January as there is no doubt that DBS are the measure of any sales venue for this category.

“Our horses-in-training sold well for those presented and we now turn our attention to the new Aintree Sale on 7th April. The concept has received a warm welcome from the industry and we look forward to presenting a quality catalogue at this iconic venue.
