Holt's number comes up

Sat, 07 July 2012

Number Theory continued his love affair with Haydock to give Leicestershire trainer John Holt his biggest ever success in the bet365 Old Newton Cup.

The four-year-old (8-1), owned by Sri Lankan-born Mohan Fonseka, has now won four races, all of which have come at the Merseyside course.

Taking over from long-time leader Tepmokea two furlongs out in the hands of Russ Kennemore, who put up 1lb overweight, the Halling gelding kept on gamely to win in good style by a neck from Quiz Mistress, who finished well. Tepmokea stuck on for third, a length and a half away.

"We started coming here because the owner's family live round here and it's just snowballed from there," said Holt, who has been training for seven years and has a string of 20 about 10 miles from Leicester racecourse.

"He's just kept improving and Russ gave him a lovely ride. We might have to think about the Ebor now. I think he'll stay the extra two furlongs."

The proud owner, who now lives in Northampton, said: "I never thought he'd win like that. Now he's won three here in a row. I must be very lucky. I told John what type of horse I wanted and he paid 9,000 guineas for him at the Newmarket Sales."
