Race Verdict

Ballabriggs looks the obvious starting point in the race and his whole season has been geared around a successful defence of his crown. As was the case 12 months ago, his solid jumping should ensure he's in the shake-up at the finish, but he's 10lb higher and, like ante-post favourite Synchronised, may be vulnerable to something lower down the weights, such as KILLYGLEN. Stuart Crawford's 10-year-old was in the process of running a big race when falling four-out in this race last year and has been given every chance by the handicapper now allowed to race off a 5lb lower rating. Treacle has taken his form to new heights this season and is respected on the back of a fine third in the Irish Hennessy, while it was hard not to be impressed with West End Rocker's demolition job over these fences in the Becher Chase in December, and he will be looking to atone for being brought down at the sixth in this contest last year. Chicago Grey has been laid out for the race by 2007-winning trainer Gordon Elliott and is likely to be staying on with a late run if keeping out of trouble at the rear of the field. For those looking for an each-way interest at long odds, Alfa Beat's recent form figures do him a disservice and he should improve for better ground, while Rare Bob, fourth in the 2009 Irish National, jumped the course well in this year's Becher.

Selection: Killyglen        Danger: Treacle        Alternative: Ballabriggs
