Export and Import

The International Team administer the import and export of all Thoroughbreds in and out of Great Britain. The transfer of information between Stud Book Authorities is vital for the purpose of integrity, and therefore, before a horse can race or breed either in Great Britain or a foreign country, the correct documentation needs to have been completed and lodged with us.
The BHA Equine Anti Doping Rules state that all horses permanently imported into Great Britain must have an Export Certificate filed with Weatherbys within 90 days of their arrival, in order to be eligible to race in Great Britain.  Further requirements that must be fulfilled in order for an imported horse to be eligible to race in Great Britain are detailed at http://rules.britishhorseracing.com/.
Where a horse is being permanently imported into Great Britain, your shipper will need to apply to the country of export for the official Export Certificate to be lodged with Weatherbys and, in some cases, for its passport to be endorsed. Similarly, where a horse is to be permanently exported from Great Britain, the shipper will need to apply for the Export Certificate to be sent from Weatherbys to the country of destination and, in some cases, for us to endorse the passport. If travelling from Great Britain by sea, an Animal Health Act Certificate may also be required.
Guidelines on what is required to Import or Export a horse are available here: Guidelines for Importing and Exporting (PDF).
If you wish to fax an application for Export to us please download the appropriate form. For individuals who are resident in the UK or who are EU residents but are not VAT registered please download the Permanent Export Application (inc VAT) (PDF) or Temporary Export Application (inc VAT) (PDF). For individuals who are EU residents (excluding UK) and are VAT registered, or are resident in any Non EU country, please download the Permanent Export Application (exc VAT) (PDF) or Temporary Export Application (exc VAT) (PDF). Once completed please fax your application to us on 01933 304758.
In 2014, DEFRA changed the terms of the Tripartite Agreement, which affects the movement of horses between Great Britain, Ireland and France.  A Briefing Note has been produced which outlines the new requirements.
