Your legal responsibilities as a horse owner

It is a legal requirement in both Great Britain and Ireland for all equidae to be issued with a passport. The legislation is different between the countries, but they share common principles.

The legal requirements are described on separate pages for each of GB and Ireland, but on this page you will find a brief introduction to your responsibilities as a horse owner.

Weatherbys is DEFRA-approved Passport Issuing Organisation in the UK, and authorised by the DAFM in Ireland as a Passport Issuing Organisation.

It is against the law to sell a horse without a passport.

It is also a legal requirement to register ownership with the Passport Issuing Organisation within 30 days of acquiring a horse. This also applies for Thoroughbred and Non-Thoroughbred Register horses which are not subject to an ownership record for racing or breeding.
