Newcastle's National Hunt meeting on Saturday must pass a 7am precautionary inspection but officials are "optimistic" racing will go ahead.

The extra meeting scheduled for Gosforth Park has not escaped the rain which has decimated the programme book in recent weeks.

With the going currently described as heavy following a further six millimetres of rain on Thursday evening, there are some areas of standing water.

However, no further significant rain is forecast.

Clerk of the course James Armstrong tweeted: "Precautionary Inspection 7am on Sat to access any further rainfall today. F'cast to dry up later & temps on up Sat & Sun 13/14C. Optimistic that racing will go ahead providing it remains dry."

Saturday is the first of a two-day jumps fixture at the track.
