Strings Of Life tunes up for Royal Ascot with Newmarket triumph

Strings Of Life could be Royal Ascot-bound after giving 2014 Diamond Jubilee Stakes hero Slade Power his first winner as a stallion in the bet365 EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes at Newmarket.

The Godolphin-owned filly, trained by Charlie Appleby, shot through a seam on the far rail to lead well inside the final furlong and make a successful debut in the hands of William Buick.

Galloping authoritatively up the rising ground, Strings Of Life (2-1 joint-favourite) got home by half a length from Kadiz.

"She's small, neat but very athletic. In the last month she's really come forward," said Appleby.

"Last week, William sat on her and she out-galloped the colts.

"She'd shown all the natural ability that I expected for her to be competitive, but I thought a bit of greenness might catch her out. She's brave."

He added: "I see no reason why we can't make roads towards Ascot. We'll give her another run before then.

"It's nice to get the first two-year-old winner under the belt and I think we'll keep her to five furlongs."

Strings Of Life was quoted at 20-1 for the Queen Mary Stakes with Paddy Power.

Appleby and Godolphin had a treble on the day with Soliloquy taking the Nell Gwyn Stakes and Old Persian (5-2 favourite) edging out Dukhan by a short head in the bet365 Handicap.

The latter is set for a step up in grade after defying top weight.

"I was confident coming into the race. The horses are in great nick," said Appleby.

"This fella had a nice profile last year, but he blew out at Pontefract on soft ground. You can put a line through that.

"His preparation has gone well and he had to be decent today to lump that weight. It was a nice, competitive field.

"I think we'll stick to this trip and he's put himself out of handicap company now. We'll look at something like the mile-and-a-quarter Listed race (the former Newmarket Stakes) at the Guineas meeting."

Roger Varian is excited about Qazyna's future after the daughter of Frankel ran away with division one of the bet365 British EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes.

Third on her only previous start in October, the 2-1 joint-favourite travelled beautifully through the one-mile contest for Andrea Atzeni and sailed to victory by three and a half lengths from Feline Groovy.

Varian said: "I'm not sure what will come next, but I think she's quite good and that's exciting.

"She's got loads of boot. Andrea said she just tanked through the race. I don't think she'll be out of her comfort zone to stay at a mile, but if you want to find out if she is an Oaks filly you've got to go 10 next time. It's a problem we'll discuss over the next 10 days."

Qazyna was cut to 25-1 from 66-1 for the Investec Oaks with Paddy Power.

Division two went to the Ralph Beckett-trained Ceilidhs Dream (14-1), who got up close home to deny 5-4 favourite Sea Of Class by a neck under Louis Steward.

"She's a nice filly, who outstayed them after falling out of the gates, which wasn't ideal," said Beckett.

"I think she'll progress and we'll probably go a mile and a quarter with her at one point and hopefully take the hood off as well," said Beckett.

Ed Walker is hoping Aelous can land one of the big sprint handicaps this season after the seven-year-old ended a losing streak going back to 2015.

The Wokingham and the Stewards' Cup, in which he was second last summer, will be among the targets following his victory in the Weatherbys General Stud Book Handicap.

Leading over a furlong out under Pat Cosgrave, Aeolus (7-1) battled on well to beat long-time leader Ower Fly by half a length.

"He just wants good ground with the sting taken out of it. Today was absolutely perfect for him," said Walker.

"My dream last year was to win the Wokingham or the Stewards' Cup. He's been well handicapped for a long time and has been unlucky.

"He's still got a thick winter coat, so today was a bit of a surprise, but he's been in good form at home.

"As long as the ground doesn't get too quick, we'll try one of those big sprint handicaps."
