Birthday boy Noel Fehily targeting Christmas celebrations

Noel Fehily is hoping to cap his 40th birthday on Christmas Eve with three riding gifts over the Festive period.

Firstly, the jump jockey is in the enviable position of attempting to win the William Hill King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day for the third year running on Silviniaco Conti.

He has also been handed extra presents of rides on The New One in the williamhill.com Christmas Hurdle on the same card and on ante-post favourite Upswing in the Coral Welsh Grand National at Chepstow on Sunday, although that meeting is subject to a precautionary inspection on Boxing Day.

"I have some nice rides over Christmas," he said.

Though the Paul Nicholls-trained Silviniaco Conti is the proven one in the King George, he is not the horse people are focusing on, with Don Cossack, Vautour and Cue Card the ones attracting more attention.

However, Fehily believes Silviniaco Conti's course record should not be overlooked.

"I suppose he is the forgotten horse a little bit, but it is a very good race and there are some young horses coming up who have done nothing wrong either," he said.

"I hope he can show what he can do around Kempton.

"He ran one bad race first time out at Wetherby (last year), but came out and won the Betfair next time. Sometimes he needs his first run and he didn't run badly at Haydock (when second to Cue Card).

"If he comes on for that run, which we think he has, he's in with a fighting chance again."

Fehily has been booked for Nigel Twiston-Davies' The New One as the trainer's son Sam, who has ridden the seven-year-old in all his 21 previous races, has opted for Old Guard for Nicholls.

"It's a nice ride to pick up," said Fehily.

"Faugheen looks the one to beat, but we'll give it a go and The New One is a very good horse in his own right. He's won around Kempton a few times and been second in a Christmas Hurdle, so we'll give it a bash."

Fehily's Christmas would be complete should he be successful on Upswing in the valuable staying handicap chase in Wales on Sunday.

He has been snapped up by trainer Jonjo O'Neill as Barry Geraghty, retained jockey for owner JP McManus, is needed in Ireland for Leopardstown's holiday fixture.

"He's a nice ride to pick up as well," said Fehily.

"I just hope this rain stops. It's been raining pretty heavy. If we get too much more the meeting must be in doubt, but he's a great ride to pick up.

"Jonjo's very good with his staying chasers. He's won all the Nationals."
