Emma Lavelle eyeing Aintree assignment for Junction Fourteen

Emma Lavelle has set her sights on Aintree in April for Junction Fourteen despite his defeat at Ascot earlier this month.

The Andover trainer blamed the soft ground for the six-year-old's below-par effort in finishing fifth to Le Mercurey in the Grade Two Mitie Novices' Chase.

She has put a line through that run and believes he will be seen to best effect under drier conditions.

"Junction Fourteen seems fine, I just don't think he enjoyed the ground," said Lavelle.

"He never travelled and he didn't jump any of the fences. His strength is how quick he can get over fences from A to B.

"I think he just wants a nice, sound surface as he never got into the race. He has come out of it fine, but he will have a little break now.

"I am not saying that he definitely won't go to Cheltenham, but it's more likely he will be trained with Aintree in mind."

Lavelle was delighted with Full Irish's display on the same card in claiming third place behind Coeur Blimey in the Listed bumper.

A similar event at Newbury is the next main objective, but the trainer is looking forward to putting the four-year-old over jumps.

"I thought Full Irish ran really well," she said.

"Turning in, the horse that was making it came back through them and allowed the front two to quicken away and he couldn't quite quicken the same as them.

"What he didn't do was have a hard race and he didn't get into a battle and I was happy for him to finish third without having to do too much.

"It was a good bumper and it has just given him a bit more experience. Looking at him in the parade ring, he looked raw compared to the others. He has such a great attitude and is far from the finished article.

"The big Newbury bumper in February will be the aim for him now, but what I am really excited about is when he goes hurdling and chasing."
