Wetherby in lap of gods over what rain to expect ahead of their big meeting

Officials at Wetherby have their fingers crossed they will not get as much rain as is forecast in some reports ahead of their two-day 188Bet Yorkshire Christmas meeting.

Clerk of the course Jonjo Sanderson assessed conditions as "soft at worst" on Christmas morning, but feared rain was on its way before the Boxing Day card.

"Everything is absolutely fine. We had one millimetre of rain on Thursday morning and it's been dry since and calm, but the forecasts are so varied," he said.

"I've got one telling me we're going to get heavy showers and six millimetres and then dry all day tomorrow and warm.

"I've got another saying it's going to start raining from lunchtime and not stop until about six o'clock tomorrow night.

"If that comes, you'd assume it would be a significant amount and would put us in a totally different position altogether.

"The ground is soft and that's at it's worst, you could argue good to soft in places, but the rain that's forecast I didn't see much point in that."
