Camping Ground could be pitched into Champion Hurdle fray at Cheltenham

Camping Ground will be considered for the Stan James Champion Hurdle after having his stamina limitations exposed at Cheltenham last Saturday.

Robert Walford's French recruit was hugely impressive in winning the two-and-a-half-mile Relkeel Hurdle at Prestbury Park on New Year's Day, but the step up to three miles in the Cleeve Hurdle proved a bridge too far and he finished well beaten in a race dominated by Thistlecrack.

With the World Hurdle now off the agenda, Walford is not ruling out letting his stable star line up in the two-mile hurdling championship on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival on March 15.

"He's absolutely fine and came out of the race as fresh as paint, to be honest," said the Dorset handler.

"He just didn't get the trip, and that's that. We won't be running him over three miles again.

"That (Champion Hurdle) is an option and there's Liverpool (Aintree Hurdle) as well, so we'll see.

"It looks like everyone is going for a place in the Champion Hurdle, apart from one horse (Faugheen), so we'll just see how our horse is nearer the time."
