Cannon Fodder set for National Spirit date at Fontwell

Sheena West is targeting the National Spirit Hurdle at Fontwell with her pint-sized mare Cannon Fodder.

The diminutive nine-year-old, who cost connections just £980, has earned over £60,000 in win and place prize-money and ran an excellent race to finish third behind Vroum Vroum Mag in a Grade Two at Ascot last month.

"Cannon Fodder is really well and she came out of the Ascot race fine. She is just so easy to train and we never have a problem with her," said West.

"She was best of the English runners in that race at Ascot so we were very proud of her.

"Some mares can be a bit quirky, but she has not got a quirk about her. All she wants to do is gallop and when it gets a bit tactical in those lesser races, it doesn't favour her.

"Those better races have got more pace in and it allows her to bring out her qualities and best attributes.

"We will do what we did last year and go for the National Spirit at Fontwell (February 28) as there are no handicaps for her.

"The ground will be disgusting and she was third in it last year, while traditionally you don't get too many runners in it."
