Double delight for Aidan Coleman at Catterick

Aidan Coleman travelled north to Catterick for just two mounts and left with a double.

Coleman's steady stream of winners slowed up a little in January with John Ferguson not running his ex-Flat horses in the deep mid-winter ground.

However, they emerged from hibernation earlier this week and Jaleo justified 8-13 favouritism in the racinguk.com Juvenile Hurdle.

A winner at Catterick in early December, he was no match for the smart Clan Des Obeaux next time out but returned to winning ways with the minimum of fuss by 11 lengths from Our Thomas.

"He was a bit fresh early but he was just very well after a bit of a break," said Coleman.

"I was a bit worried as he was a bit exuberant, but he's got a nice nature and after a few furlongs he dropped the bit and was back on an even keel.

"He's a joy to ride, horses like him make my job easy. He could be a Fred Winter type, he's two from three now but got stuffed at Newbury. He's hard to judge."

Coleman's win on Wade Harper in the European Breeders' Fund "National Hunt" Novices' Hurdle was more fortunate as he held on by three-quarters of a length from the fast-finishing Double W's.

The eventual runner-up was brought almost to a standstill by the fall of Jonjo O'Neill's Beggars Cross before leaving the back straight.

Brian Hughes understandably took plenty of time before putting Double W's back in the race and Wade Harper had shot clear.

On approaching the final flight the gap between the pair was shrinking rapidly but unfortunately Double W's landed on all fours which was probably the difference between winning and losing for the 7-4 joint-favourites.

Sam Drake has only had a handful of runners since taking over the licence from her father, Richard, but saddled her second winner when Raktiman (9-2) spreadeagled the opposition in the Racing UK Anywhere Handicap Chase.

Putting the pace to the race with multiple course winner Cloudy Joker, his task was made easier when that rival took a crashing fall down the back straight. Jonathan England was left some 10 lengths clear and it was an advantage that he would not relinquish.

Micky Hammond has rejuvenated Auldthunder, who was winning at the track for the second time in just over a week in the Interactive Handicap Chase. Run off his feet in the early stages, Joe Colliver bided his time and the 4-1 joint-favourite powered home, reeling in Runswick Relax to win going away by five lengths.

"It was quicker ground today and it probably just got him on his head a little bit early on in the race. I think they also went quick and came back to him but give him his due, he's stuck to the task and won quite nicely in the end," said Hammond on Racing UK.

"It looks as if he wants four miles rather than three! He's had two quick runs now so we'll see how he takes this."

Sue Smith and Danny Cook continue to team up to good effect and Hainan (7-2) was a convincing winner of the Dine And View At Catterick Races Handicap Hurdle, meaning both the five-year-old's wins have come at the track.
