Nigel Twiston-Davies hails Bristol De Mai performance

Nigel Twiston-Davies feels it is too early to say how good exciting novice chaser Bristol De Mai will be.

Although hailing the five-year-old's victory in the Scilly Isles Novices' Chase at Sandown on Saturday as probably the best performance of his career, the Naunton handler is reluctant to compare him to his former stable stars at this stage.

After running away with the Altcar Novices' Chase at Haydock last month, the grey gelding saw his odds for the JLT Novices' Chase at next month's Cheltenham Festival shorten when claiming his first Grade One victory over fences.

Twiston-Davies said: "Bristol De Mai has come out of his race fine, which is good news. I think that was probably his best performance.

"In his two previous races he absolutely murdered them, but he was taking on higher class runners at Sandown and he beat them really well. Moving him up in trip to two and half miles has really helped him.

"He will go to the JLT now as we are pretty sure two and a half miles is his trip, but I think he will probably stay further in the end.

"Anything is possible, but it is too early to start to comparing him. He is a very exciting horse and we are lucky to have him."

Bristol De Mai's victory initiated the first leg of a big-race double for Twiston-Davies with Blaklion landing the Towton Novices' Chase at Wetherby.

Although the seven-year-old is prominent in the betting for both the National Hunt Chase and RSA Chase, Twiston-Davies has said the latter is likely to be next on the agenda.

He said: "Blaklion is fine after his race. He is very tough and stays very well. We were delighted with the win.

"At the moment he is most likely to go for the RSA."

Dual bumper winner Ballyandy is in contention to test his Festival credentials at Newbury on Saturday with Twiston-Davies outlining plans to run him in a Listed contest at the track.

He said: "The idea is to go to Newbury on Saturday then go to the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival. He is a horse with a huge future.

"Every year we look forward to Cheltenham, but we look to have some good chances this year."
