Philip Hobbs salutes Captain Chris as he heads for retirement

Grade One-winning chaser Captain Chris has been retired.

Trained by Philip Hobbs, the 12-year-old won nine of his 23 starts, earning over £400,000 in career prize-money.

He was last seen winning the Ascot Chase in February 2014, with his career halted by leg problems.

Hobbs told At The Races: "He's retired. It's not bad, but he had a minor recurrence of a suspensory problem, he'd need another year off and realistically that's not very sensible at his age."

Owned by Graham and Diana Whateley, Captain Chris landed the Arkle Trophy at Cheltenham in 2011 and followed up at Punchestown that year in the Ryanair Novice Chase.

Later in 2011 he was third to Kauto Star in the King George VI Chase at Kempton and was second in the Boxing Day showpiece the following year to Long Run.

Hobbs added: "After Rooster Booster he was the best horse we've ever had here, it was phenomenal how good he was at his very best and to win the Arkle going left-handed, probably losing a length or two at every fence and still winning well, was amazing.

"He was definitely better going right-handed. He was only just beaten in the King George and to win a race like that would have been fantastic, but he was very, very good."
