Road To Riches heads Irish Gold Cup possibles

Road To Riches is the star name among 10 horses confirmed for Saturday's Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown.

Noel Meade's stable star has not been seen in competitive action since landing the Clonmel Oil Chase in November, but is likely to be a hot favourite for his return to action after the Willie Mullins-trained pair of Don Poli and Vautour were taken out.

Mullins still has three possible runners, with Valseur Lido, Sir Des Champs and On His Own all in contention, while Meade is also set to saddle Wounded Warrior.

The admirable veteran First Lieutenant was only narrowly beaten by Don Poli in the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown's Christmas meeting and trainer Mouse Morris is hoping for another bold show.

"I think the reception he got for finishing second (in the Lexus) was quite touching. It seems he's a popular horse with people," Morris told the Irish Times.

"He's dead genuine. He couldn't be more honest. He just usually manages to find one to beat him. But he has won Grade Ones, and won over 600,000 euro in prize-money, so how bad is that?

"He's possibly about 7lb off being a 160 horse, and while the Lexus mightn't have been the greatest race, he's like Foxrock on form, so he's not without a chance."

The Ted Walsh-trained Foxrock was third in the Lexus and only narrowly beaten by Carlingford Lough, who benefited from an inspired Tony McCoy ride, in this prestigious event 12 months ago.

Carlingford Lough, trained by John Kiely, is set to return to defend his crown, but has plenty to prove after finishing last of six in the Lexus.

Enda Bolger's Gilgamboa and Fine Rightly from Stuart Crawford's yard complete the acceptors.
