Ryan Winks in full cry after 'greatest day' at Musselburgh

'Singing jockey' Ryan Winks would not want to swap winning at Musselburgh on Sunday for anything - including the chance to play at Wembley Stadium.

Winks, 35, provided colour to a grey yet entertaining day at the East Lothian circuit when he guided Chestnut Ben to victory in the Scottish Champion Chase.

Trained in Little Houghton, South Yorkshire, by the amateur rider's father Peter, the 11-year-old chestnut caused a big upset at odds of 18-1 in a race which featured horses from the powerful yards of David Pipe and Nicky Henderson.

Caked in mud yet smiling brightly, Ryan Winks performed a Frankie Dettori-esque flying dismount upon his return to the winner's enclosure.

A regular singer on the northern club circuit and a former cruise-liner crooner, soft-rock-specialist Winks then responded to course announcer Derek Thompson's hyperactive urgings by performing an enthusiastic rendition of 'We Are The Champions', by Queen.

Winks said: "National Hunt racing needs entertainers, and hopefully I brought a bit of panache to Musselburgh.

"Everyone loves entertainers - look at Alex Higgins in snooker, for instance - and it was just about enjoying the moment and having lots and lots of fun.

"For me, that was our Champion Chase at Cheltenham and to do it like that was something else.

"I knew after a mile I'd win because they went too quick, especially on that ground.

"I just sat there, with a light weight, waiting for them to come back to me. I was just so lucky that everything clicked into place.

"You just can't beat it - what an amazing feeling - and i t was my greatest day in racing by a long, long way.

"If you were to ask me if I'd rather sing at Wembley in front of thousands of people, or do what I did with Chestnut Ben, I'd take winning at Musselburgh all day long, without a shadow of a doubt."
