To mark the publication of the 57th edition of the Bloodstock Sales Review, we have compiled a top ten of the most profitable British and Irish-based yearling sires of last year. We have worked out each sires’ profitability index by dividing their 2021 yearling average by their covering fee of 2019, when the offspring in question were conceived.

In eighth place...
Sixties Icon
2021 yearling ave: 33,114gns/€38,942
2019 covering fee: £6,000
Profitability index: 5.79

St Leger hero Sixties Icon, a member of Galileo’s first crop, has long been recognised as a reliable option for breeders on a budget, siring smart performers such as Czabo, Epsom Icon, Nagano Gold, Nancy From Nairobi and Sixties Groove from low covering fees.

He was represented by only three yearlings at the sales last year, but one – a half-brother to Listed-placed Strictly Silca from John Troy – sold to George Boughey for 90,000gns at Tattersalls to boost his average to 33,114gns/€38,942. The good news is that the stallion is available at half his 2019 fee of £6,000 this year.
