Brian Ellison sets sights on Cheltenham run with Definitly Red

Brian Ellison is looking to send Definitly Red straight to the Cheltenham Festival without another run, ground permitting.

The North Yorkshire handler will give his smart novice entries in both the RSA Chase and the National Hunt Chase with the caveat that the seven-year-old would side-step the big meeting if the going was fast.

Definitly Red showed he would not be out of place at Cheltenham when finishing an excellent second to Black Hercules at Warwick last Saturday after making a winning debut over fences at Catterick on New Year's Day.

"He's great. I was over the moon with him. I think we got beat by a very good horse," said Ellison.

"If he's odds-on in an easy race like he was at Catterick, he will always make it look hard. It suits him being in a better race where you have to get a stronger pace.

"It's Cheltenham next, I hope. If the ground was fast he wouldn't go. If he does go there it will be the RSA or the four-miler, depending on the ground. If it was very soft he'd probably go for the shorter race."
