Bristol bounds clear to stake Cheltenham claim

Bristol De Mai entered the frame for the RSA Chase at Cheltenham as well as the JLT when sauntering to victory in the Start Your RacingUK Free Trial Now Novices' Chase at Haydock.

The Grade Two event had attracted a small but select field with Nigel Twiston-Davies' runner sent off the 7-4 second-favourite behind Venetia Williams' Otago Trail.

However, the favourite, who had won so well at Chepstow two weeks ago, was never travelling from an early stage.

From some way out the only danger was Amore Alato but with two to jump he was running on empty, allowing Bristol De Mai to coast to a 32-length win under Daryl Jacob.

"He's won very well and he handles that bad ground well," said Twiston-Davies.

"We're thinking a trip is what he needs, seeing him win like that.

"He won't have an Arkle entry now and he'll be in the JLT and RSA.

"As he's not pulling so much now we think he'll stay, he was gassy when he ran against Garde Le Victoire and then Ar Mad took him off his feet.

"We think if he's running over further he won't need the ground so deep.

"He jumps great and will go straight to Cheltenham, I'd have thought."
