Espinoza looking forward to Dubai World Cup challenge with California Chrome

Victor Espinoza is eager to see how California Chrome fares as he returns to Meydan for a second crack at the Dubai World Cup.

Winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in 2014, the five-year-old found only Prince Bishop too good in the world's richest race last year, going down by just under three lengths.

California Chrome then shipped to Britain for a shot at the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot but suffered a setback just days before the race and was then off the track until returning at Santa Anita earlier this month.

Espinoza admits he was not convinced Art Sherman's charge was back to his best when he lined up in the San Pasqual Stakes but a fine piece of work before victory in the race has reignited his enthusiasm about the son of Lucky Pulpit.

He said: "I was not really impressed the first time that I worked him. I thought it was good work, but not back together like he was before.

"Then they shipped him to Santa Anita and the last work before the race, he worked 1 minute and 10 seconds and that was it. I really changed my mind from there.

"When it came down to the race, I thought it would be an easy race for him. He ran as I expected, a big race, and then he got a little bit tired which is normal after a big lay off.

"I'm curious like everybody else how he will run his next race in Dubai as he has to ship and it's a long way to get there.

"He has done it before, but you never know. If he runs the way he ran his last race, I think he will be in good shape for the Dubai World Cup.

"Sometimes the owner only thinks about plans, but as a jockey or a trainer we think about the horse and how he is going to be. I think it will be too much for him to run twice before the World Cup. One race before will be enough and he will be in good shape.

"I will ride the World Cup how the race is set up. It's always about the pace. I'm not worried who is in there. Get in a good position.

"It's very important if they travel right and are happy. The most important thing for me is the horse is happy in the race. If he's happy in the race, he will run his best."
