Harry The Viking out to plunder Eider Chase at Newcastle

Harry The Viking is to be geared up for next month's Eider Chase at Newcastle ahead of a potential switch to the cross-country fences at the Cheltenham Festival.

Trainer Sandy Thomson believes the extended four-mile contest on February 27 will suit the 11-year-old down to the ground.

Despite his advancing years, Harry The Viking has shown his appetite for the game still remains strong, having finished in the frame on each of last three starts, the most recent of which when he chased home Rigadin De Beauchene at Haydock last month.

Thomson said: "He's still loving it and I've always thought the Eider Chase is his sort of race.

"The owners were keen on the Classic Chase at Warwick, but it's only two and a half weeks after he had a hard race at Haydock so I would think the Eider would be his target.

"It would be great to get him in the Grand National but he has to go up a few pounds to get into that so we might look at the cross-country chase at Cheltenham.

"He'll either love it or hate it."

The Berwickshire handler is to keep a low profile with Spirit Of Kayf after the four-year-old obliged at the second time of asking in a bumper at Ayr.

He said: "We will probably try run Spirit Of Kayf in another bumper with a penalty and see what happens.

"He is going to be more of a staying hurdler rather than a quick horse, but I don't want to do too much with him this year."
