McCoy hails dominant Mullins

Study and learn from Willie Mullins. That is the message from Sir Anthony McCoy.

The all-conquering Mullins is set for another big weekend with runners in Britain and Ireland, including Gold Cup runner-up Djakadam in the BetBright Trial Chase at Cheltenham on Saturday.

Many bookmakers make Irish champion Mullins odds-on to lift the British equivalent for the first time, and McCoy reckons the only way to get better than him is to copy him.

The now-retired Ulsterman said: "Willie Mullins is an exceptionally good trainer, he's good at placing them, he has one of the best jockeys (Ruby Walsh) we've ever seen riding for him and he's becoming just as dominant in the UK as he is in Ireland.

"He's a brilliant trainer and at the moment they are all struggling to compete against him, but people will be watching Willie and learning from him. The best way to compete with people who are successful is to copy them.

"You then have to find a way to be better than them."

Mullins dominates the ante-post markets on the Festival in March, but McCoy has the utmost respect for the talents of major rivals such as Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls.

Writing in his blog for William Hill, the 20-times champion said: "Nicky Henderson is still the most successful trainer at Cheltenham and Paul Nicholls has been so dominant over the past 15 or 16 years.

"I would hate to be a bookmaker laying Paul or Nicky NOT to have a winner at Cheltenham as they are so good at placing their horses. If anyone can find a horse to win at Cheltenham it's them."
