'Optimistic' Warwick to take cover

Frost covers are to be deployed at Warwick from Wednesday to protect the course ahead of the big meeting on Saturday, featuring the Betfred Classic Chase.

While the ground at the moment is heavy after the recent rain, colder weather, with the added possibility of wintry showers, is set to take its place.

Temperatures are currently forecast to dip down to freezing overnight, with a daytime high of 6C.

Clerk of the course Jane Hedley said: " We are planning to put frost covers down, probably Wednesday, and from past experience of using them at other tracks they would protect us against the level of frost that is currently forecast.

"We will put the covers on the vast majority of the track - all the way up the straight where we've got the hurdles and fences so we will cover the entire straight and the running lines on the bend.

"We are optimistic. On the current forecast past experience has shown that the frost covers would ward off that level of frost."
