War Glory on top in Wolverhampton battle

One-eyed War Glory battled to a first career victory in the 32Red.com Maiden Stakes at Wolverhampton.

Runner-up on his racecourse debut over the same seven furlongs three weeks earlier, the Richard Hannon-trained three-year-old proved his disability is no handicap as he landed the odds in determined fashion.

Always handy, War Glory (4-11 favourite) kept on powerfully for Sean Levey to hold Eskandari by three-quarters of a length.

Levey said: "He ran very well first time out against an 80-rated horse (Always Welcome) but was just a bit green. He's come on at home and he's got the job done today.

"Being blind in one eye has never seemed to affect him. He's not scared of horses on the other side. He's straight, he doesn't hang and it's not stopping him by any means. I think he'll progress again and I thought after today he'd get a mile. There are plenty of options and he'll definitely step up again."

Kalamata (3-1) got up close home to snatch the spoils in the £10 Free At 32Red.com Handicap.

Unplaced in all her three previous starts, the Roger Varian-trained filly responded gamely to Jack Mitchell's urgings to collar Schoolboy Error by half a length on her handicap bow.

"They went a good-enough gallop and she came off the bridle a long way out. Turning in I didn't think I had a chance and then she just switched leads and picked up all the way to the line," said Mitchell.

"She needed every yard of this trip and I think she'll get further. We got close to the second very late on. Luckily I was a neck up and she put her head down for me."

Irish raider Little Stampy (2-1 favourite) repeated last month's course success over the mile and a half in the Download The Coral App Handicap, the David Broad-trained mare getting home by a length and a quarter from Pinotage under Shane Gray.

"She won here before Christmas and opportunities at home are very limited and Dundalk is very competitive, so we decided to come over and it's paid off," the County Meath handler told At The Races.

"We'll probably come back in a few weeks if the handicapper is not too hard on her."

Apprentice George Downing had By Rights (6-1) smartly out of the stalls as Tony Carroll's mare made all in the 32Red Casino Fillies' Handicap.

Kieran O'Neill brought the Ed de Giles-trained Tijuca (5-2) with a sweeping run in the centre of the course to take the Bet In Play At Coral Handicap from Mfiftythreedotcom.

Pacolita (12-1) led inside the final half furlong under Ryan Clark to take the Ladbrokes Apprentice Handicap for trainer Sylvester Kirk.

John Egan kept the David Evans-trained Frivolous Lady (8-1) up to her work to pull two and a quarter lengths clear of Sky Ferry in the 32RedSport.com Selling Stakes.
