Andrew Balding nominates Champions Day target for twinkling Star

Andrew Balding's Dancing Star will get the chance to test the water at Group-race level after evoking memories of her distant relative Lochsong with a well-supported victory in the Qatar Stewards' Cup at Goodwood.

You have to go back to 1992 to find a distaffer on the roll of honour when the four-year-old Lochsong destroyed her rivals in the same colours. Now the sky could be the limit for Dancing Star, who was notching a fourth success from only five outings in 2016.

Having crept into the race as the last horse to make the cut, the 9-2 favourite was always in a handy position for David Probert and held a definite lead approaching the final furlong.

Several rivals threw down challenges, but in the final 50 yards the Jeff Smith-owned three-year-old was going away from them and scored by a length and a quarter and a nose from Orion's Bow and Raucous.

Balding is now keen to see his stable star enjoy a short break before coming back for one race at the end of the season.

He said: "She has won it so well. We had a good draw but you have got to be impressed and she is a very special animal. I am feeling very blessed and very lucky not only to have a filly as good as her but also to get into the race.

"I think it was a little more luck than judgement there - we just crept in - and to get the draw, everything fell into place.

"I think after her busy spell she should have a holiday at the Littleton Stud and then we can bring her back for the big sprint on Champions Day at Ascot.

"I don't want to pick up an unnecessary penalty - it would be nice if she stays in training next year and, if she is going to win something, it might as well be something big.

"She has improved a huge amount from two to three and has improved all year. The whole family have done it and she is a year ahead of Lochsong already.

"She will be an even better filly next year and we have much to look forward to. I'm also thrilled for Jeff, who has been the most loyal supporter of the yard for many, many years."

Smith paid his own compliment to the winner and said: "She's a grand-daughter of Lochangel who was herself a half-sister to Lochsong, but this filly is a step ahead of Lochsong already as she's won it a year earlier.

"I think she was the last filly to win the Stewards' Cup, so we are keeping up a good family tradition."

Probert was overjoyed with his mount and commented: "We were lucky to creep in at the bottom and got a lovely draw. I had prayed to the gods that she would get in. Thank god she got in.

"She's improved so much this year, run by run. She's grown into such a nice filly.

"She had speed all around her which helped and she took me into the race so well. As a three-year-old against older horses she had a tough task, but she's done it so well.

"These sort of opportunities don't come along often and to win such a prestigious handicap, and when it all comes right, is unbelievable. I'm grateful to Mr Smith for giving me that opportunity."
