Back-to-form Bateel relishes Newmarket ground in Fred Archer

Bateel showed her appreciation for a soft surface when turning in a career-best display with victory in the Tangent Office Furniture Supporting The AHT Fred Archer Stakes at Newmarket.

After remaining unbeaten in three starts last season the four-year-old lost her perfect record when finishing second in Listed event on her return at Goodwood behind stablemate Carnachy, before finishing fifth last time out back at the Sussex track.

Anchored at the rear of the field by William Buick in the mile-and-a-half Listed event, the 8-11 favourite was one of the first to come off the bridle in behind the pace-setting John Reel.

Although needing an element of encouragement to reach top gear, the daughter of Dubawi soon came back on the bit before ploughing through the rain-softened ground to pick off her rivals late on, powering away to a two-and-a-quarter-length victory.

Trainer David Simcock said: "The ground is key to her and always has been. I think unfortunately people were critical of Jamie Spencer when she finished second at Goodwood and they were a bit critical when she finished fifth second time out.

"She proved on soft ground last year that she just goes through it and it turns her from a slow filly into a fast filly. William Buick was very pleased and said she showed lots of class on that ground.

"She will go where she gets the ground. The race at Ascot on Champions Day in October (Fillies' and Mares') might be right up her street."
