Cambridgeshire aim for Man Of Harlech

Man Of Harlech is to be given a summer break ahead of returning for an autumn campaign geared around a second outing in the Cambridgeshire.

Having finished fourth in the historic nine-furlong event last year, connections of the Andrew Balding trained-gelding are eager to have another stab at the heritage handicap at Newmarket on September 24.

Although without a win to his name in four starts this term the lightly-raced five-year-old was far from disgraced last time out when finishing mid-division in the Royal Hunt Cup.

Dan Downie, racing manager to owners Elite Racing Club, said: "He did miss a bit of work with a foot abscess before Royal Ascot.

"Both myself and Andrew Balding felt he just blew up in the last furlong. He was travelling well but he just got swamped. In the circumstances he ran well.

"I think he will have a bit of a break now before coming back for the autumn. He obviously loves the soft ground and he will come back for the Cambridgeshire as his main target, while he may also go for the Balmoral Handicap on Champions Day."

A switch of codes looks to be in store for the Alan King-trained Top Tug, who finished midfield in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes at the Royal meeting, sooner rather than later despite the Ebor remaining a potential target later in the campaign.

Downie added: "Top Tug is fine and he was running off his highest-ever mark at Royal Ascot.

"It didn't help that he missed the break but better ground would have probably helped him.

"We were working back from the Ebor, but we are desperate to send him hurdling so he will need a break soon.

"He was purchased to be a dual-purpose horse. He came in a bit late that is why we didn't go hurdling immediately but he has been schooling already."
