Classic-bound Sword Fighter fends off all-comers in Curragh Cup

Sword Fighter is firmly on track for the St Leger at Doncaster after backing up his Queen's Vase success when giving another admirable display in the Coral.ie Curragh Cup at the County Kildare course.

Completing a Group-race four-timer for trainer Aidan O'Brien, Sword Fighter (11-4) was not for passing as, like at Royal Ascot, he was soon at the head of affairs and refused to be headed.

He kept finding for Seamie Heffernan in the straight as his stablemate Landofhopeandglory, the 15-8 favourite, and Dermot Weld's Alveena both tried to overtake him.

Ryan Moore had trouble getting Landhopeofandglory out of a pocket, but he could not get close enough to Sword Fighter, who was two lengths in front at the line.

O'Brien said: "He's a very genuine horse. He really wants it, and stays very well. Seamie gave him a great ride, just like Colm (O'Donoghue) did in Ascot. It's my fault that Ryan rode the other horse.

"He'll have a little break now as he's had a tough few weeks, and he's made for the English Leger (September 10)."
